@cbsmornings: Some people in Hurricane Helene’s path may never have received crucial — and possibly life-saving — warnings to evacuate, or those warnings came too late. Tom Hanson looks at how to opt in to emergency notifications and the agencies responsible for alerting Americans. #hurricanehelene #asheville #northcarolina
Netflix knows when somebody else logs into your account at a different house but we can’t have good warning systems

I don’t think we should make a system where people have to opt in to receiving alerts. I think the alerts should be automatic for everybody and if you don’t want the alerts you opt out.

What if you live somewhere that has zero or limited cell service? Hell, I know parts of Maryland that my iPhone is just a weight

We were hit by a tornado. We had no alert cause our county had turned off notifications because of complaints by citizens.

I watched an interview from a lady conducting rescues, and she said the power grid went down before most alerts were even sent out. Most never received them until they got power restoreda week later.

the national weather service gave a warning days in advance and described exactly what happened

Self awareness, environmental awareness and watching the weather might help. People are too complacent 🥺

I live in Clyde and they set off sirens and fire trucks drove up and down the roads blaring their horns. Around 4:30 am

Same. I live in Black Mountain and we didn't get the evacuation alerts until afternoon. By then we were already trapped by major flooding.

I'm in Missouri and we have tornado sirens which are tested monthly, why couldn't these be used to warn against other types of dangerous immediate weather? I'm sure the South has tornado sirens as wel

People also often don’t listen or read the warnings - so they wouldn’t even know what it said.

I’m about 30 mins from swannanoa and all I can say is that at 6am on the 27th the winds were so bad trees were falling on my house. No one could’ve driven in that to evacuate

I was alerted by the tree ripping the power line from my house and busting out my window at 4:30am. I have NEVER received one of these alerts, I’ve hadn’t heard of anything but amber alerts.
