@econchrisclarke: The Nobel goes to Acemoglu, Johnson, & Robinson for their work on the effects of institutions on long-run economic prosperity. It's not an easy topic to study, empirics have advanced since. We've also got a few memes out of it over the years.
Extractive institutions? So are Venture Capitalists and Hedge Funds the modern day Conquistadors?

is the focus strictly on past institutions? or can this be applied to the current centers of urbanizations and GDP? should we expect the center of wealth to shift back towards asia in a few centuries

the way you put acemoglu's productivity makes me suspicious. I've known more than one academic that was very "productive" and all the while it was because they were extractive institutions themselves.

I'm so happy for it. I have been hoping for Acemoglu to get the prize. Was looking at the the odds last week and got disappointed that he wasn't on any of the lists.

Did a glitch remove part of the video between “higher population density” and “meaning they were richer” or was this phrasing intended? The video jumped at that moment.

It’s just primitive accumulation. It laid the foundation for capital accumulation and eventually imperialism in the modern sense. unequal exchange etc. don’t need a study for that. Marx is right again
