There’s been a lot of talk surrounding public education in the Lone Star state, as the dawning of a new legislative session has brought with it a push toward a “voucher system.” This structure, championed by our Governor, Greg Abbott , would perpetuate the inherent elitist mentality that separates the disabled from their neurotypical peers. It would further target black and brown children who are already being told by our new administration that their histories, languages, and cultures don’t matter. It would widen the gap between those who fall below the poverty line and their counterparts. It would isolate rural schools and children who have no real attainable access to “choices.” With this campaign, I’ve been inundated with negative rhetoric surrounding public schools in our state. And this is my answer to that rhetoric. Lucy is my disabled, primarily nonverbal daughter. A little girl who is made in the image of her creator. A child whose access to specialized instruction and accessibility should not only be protected, but prioritized. And what you hear in the background are the squeals of delight from her public school teacher- a teacher who dedicates every day to bettering Lucy Claire’s life. An educator who invests time, and creativity, and passion, and consistency with every single student who enters her classroom- because that’s what public schools do. When my little girl walks through the front door, she’s protected by federal law. They can’t choose not to teach her… or place her in a room by herself to just be babysat… or withhold funds that are necessary for her to access her environment. And those educators do the work of stretching resources and resolve- because they believe in the holy work of inclusion. Curriculum is determined by the state. So is standardized testing, and the majority of funding. And rather than take accountability for issues, our legislators seek to divert blame. Fully fund public education. Show Texas teachers that their work matters. Because to those of us raising the vulnerable- it matters more than words can say. #welovelucy #downsyndrome #nothingdownaboutit #downrightperfect #theluckyfew #publiceducation #texas #fyp #vouchers
