My brother told me that his Japanese bosses preferred that he speak with a Japanese accent (as opposed to a more neutral accent) when delivering an English report, otherwise they’ll have a hard time picking up on what he’s saying.

This is true for all languages pretty much. If you use sounds within your audiences phoneme inventory, they will understand you better.
