DIY Garden Projects for Biodiversity and Abundance! 🌱🌼🐝🥗 If you haven’t already it’s time to plan and prepare the vegetable garden for the 2025 growing season! 👏😊 so here are 5 of my top DIY garden projects for increasing biodiversity and therefore harvests from the garden… The first is a wildlife mansion with a living roof for pollinators, lots of habitat for insects, and a hedgehog house at the base, all made from pallets and lots of organic materials. 🏡🐝🦔 The second is a polyculture vegetable bed, and by simply scattering a diverse mix of seeds that germinate at varying rates, with vary little maintenance, you’ll be able to harvest from it all season. 🥗🌼🐝 The third is pallet compost bays, with a gutter for water catchment, which is a low cost way to turn garden and kitchen waste into a valuable resource to mulch garden beds and feed the soil. 🪱🌱 The fourth is a wildlife pond made from half an oak barrel drawing wildlife such as frogs and toads to your garden, reducing slug populations, and is a great option for smaller gardens. 🐸 And lastly, an in ground worm farm made from an reused lidded bucket and a large pot, that will convert kitchen waste into fertility, boosting plant growth and reducing waste. 🪱🌱🌼 So which ones will you be building in your garden this season? And you can find detailed instructions for all of these projects in my new book! 😊📗 there’s a link at the top of my profile bio or comment below and I’ll send you a link 😊 #gardeningtips #gardenproject #diyproject #vegetablegarden #gardeninspiration
Willow Bark Tea 🌳☕️🫖 Winter is when I harvest my white willow bark as this is when the tree contains the highest concentrations of salicin. Known as natures aspirin and it has traditionally been used to relieve pain and is said to be anti-inflammatory due to its accompanying flavonoids. I just prune some young branches, crush and dry them in a dehydrator on a low setting or just leave them out in a warm, well ventilated room and once dry I store them until needed. I then just steep the bark in hot water for 3-5 minutes and drink as a tea. I use it in moderation though, as too much can cause stomach cramps and other possible issues. And if allergic to aspirin, then I wouldn’t use this either. Willow trees can also absorb heavy metals, so it’s important to avoid willows growing near industrial sites for example. And remember always ensure correct identification by consulting multiple sources, be conscious and cautious when removing branches from the trees to limit disturbance, and do not remove bark from the trunk as this may allow pathogens to enter which could kill the tree. Not medical advise, just sharing my experiences and observations, so as always, it’s best to conduct your own research before deciding if it’s right for you. 😊 Just one of many reasons why willow is one of my favourite trees, what’s yours? 🌳 #foraging #homeremedies #willow #herbaltea #herbalism #gardeningtips

Sow Sweet Peas in January! 🫛💐 Sweet peas are hardy, fragrant, produce attractive pollinators enticing flowers and are a great way to overcome those January blues when the spring garden feels oh so far away! 😔🌱 They can be sown from January to as late as May and I sow them successionally throughout, but it’s nice to have some earlier flowers around the gardens so I start sowing them started now. 😊👍🏻 Today I’m sowing the varieties ‘green fingers’ and ‘almost black’ which has an amazing scent. Sweet pea seeds have a thick seed coat so I soak them overnight prior to planting to speed up germination, then sow seeds individually at a depth of around twice their size, and cover with compost. I sow mine into deep cell seed trays, but it is often advised that they are sown in decomposable root trainers, or you could just use toilet roll tubes and plant out the whole thing to minimise root disturbance. Water them well and place inside somewhere that has a nice level ambient temperature and as soon as they begin to emerge, move them to a sunny windowsill or a greenhouse or polytunnel if you have one. 🌱 Id then cover with fleece through the colder evenings if in a greenhouse or tunnel. And When the plants are around 10cm tall, pinch out the growing point, which encourages bushier growth, and then just plant out after the last chance of a hard frost and give them something to climb like a bamboo structure. Happy sowing and thanks for watching 😊🌱 #sowingseeds #gardeningtips #sweetpeas #growingflowers #flowergarden
