In a strange way, one of the greatest compliments somebody can give you is when they take you for granted. Because we take for granted the things that we #love the most. When you are young and you have the right kind of #parents , you don't thank them. You don't hope that they will be there. They just are. Being taken for granted means that you are reliable, trusted, and true. One of the philosophically interesting examples of this is with #sickness . A large part of sickness involves appreciating that which you took for granted. When you have a sore throat, you can’t believe you didn't enjoy swallowing more. When you have a cold, you wish you'd enjoyed tasting. The awareness of this broken body is what turns it into an object. According to #Heidegger , in our usual, functioning days, the #body is an invisible tool. It is the window through which you see everything else. But when we are sick, and when the window is broken, we become acutely aware of it. The body is pulled into sight for the first time in a very long time. Because there is a sense of vulnerability when you are sick. Yesterday you were strutting through life with the immortal blasé of the healthy, but today you're forced to slow down, to repair, and to accept that you, as all things, are limited. In sickness, we are humbled. But we are also transformed. We emerge from our sweat-stained sick bed only by resilience. And one day, when the #illness passes through, we shall throw our body back into #loving disregard. We shall take it for granted again. And that's just as it should be. #philosophy
