Created in 1848, this vibrant woodblock print titled Rokkasen (The Six Immortal Poets) by the master ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi presents a dynamic group portrait of Japan’s most celebrated classical waka poets from the ninth century. Rather than a traditional historical depiction, Kuniyoshi brilliantly captures contemporary Edo-period Kabuki actors performing in the roles of these poetic icons, blending classical literary prestige with the thriving pop culture of his day. At the center sits the famous female poet Ono no Komachi, surrounded by her five male peers—Ariwara no Narihira, Sōjō Henjō, Kisen Hōshi, Ōtomo no Kuronushi, and Fun'ya no Yasuhide—all rendered with dramatic theatrical expressions and lavish, highly detailed garments that showcase Kuniyoshi's characteristic flair for energetic design. 1848年に浮世絵の巨匠、歌川国芳によって制作されたこの鮮やかな木版画は、**『六歌仙』**と題され、9世紀の日本を代表する高名な和歌の詠み人たちをダイナミックな群像画として描いています。国芳は、伝統的な歴史画として描くのではなく、当時の江戸の歌舞伎役者がこれら詩歌のアイコンたちを演じている姿として見事に表現し、古典的な文学の気品と当時の盛んな大衆文化を融合させました。画面中央には高名な女流歌人である小野小町が座し、その周囲を在原業平、僧正遍昭、喜撰法師、大伴黒主、文屋康秀の5人の歌人が取り囲んでいます。全員が劇的な歌舞伎の表情を浮かべ、細部まで描き込まれた豪華な衣装を身にまとっており、躍動感あふれるデザインを得意とした国芳ならではの独特な才能が遺憾なく発揮されています。#japan #anime #kabuki #arthistory #edo
