Yes, Peña and Rocha were public servants. But they were also private individuals with lives outside their uniforms. They were more than their professions, and their loved ones deserve some privacy during this tragedy. Let's be honest. A lot of y'all love chisme. Curiosity gets the best of us. We want to know what happened, why it happened, and whether the rumors circulating are true. But while we're busy asking questions, speculating, and spreading rumors, there are families grieving the loss of two people they loved. Can we talk about that? Can we highlight her accomplishments? Can we remember the doors she opened and the service she gave to this community? Can we remember BOTH individuals for the lives they lived instead of reducing their entire existence to the circumstances surrounding their deaths? Because here's the thing about death: It's a moment in our lives that every single one of us has an appointment with. None of us knows when that appointment will come. And when ours does, wouldn't we rather be remembered for how we lived than have strangers on the internet obsessing over how we died? These were real people. People with families, friends, coworkers, memories, and stories. People who served their community, including those who put themselves in harm's way to protect others. And now, in the middle of this tragedy, we're going to repay that service with rumors, speculation, and demands for answers? They deserve better. Their loved ones deserve better. And quite frankly, we need to do better as a community. I'm not saying questions should never be asked or that public agencies shouldn't be held accountable. Accountability matters. But there's a difference between seeking legitimate answers and treating someone's death like the latest episode of neighborhood chisme. Whether the rumors are true or not, we don't need to participate in spreading them. If the truth is eventually shared publicly, then so be it. But we don't have to be so eager to satisfy our curiosity that we forget the humanity of the people involved. Instead of asking, "How did they die?" Maybe we should start asking, "How did they live?" Two lives were lost. Multiple families are mourning. A community is grieving. Let's offer our condolences, honor their lives, and give their loved ones the dignity and respect they deserve during this tragedy.
