My mom was very clear that she moved us 700 miles away from her parents bc she couldn't stand being around them. Then I went NC and my parents said "Nothing would ever make us do this to our parents!"

Yep my mom left her family and moved to CA as a young woman in the mid 60’s. I always thought that was strange. She never discussed it of course!

growing up it never occurred to me that my dad & his bro were estranged even tho I never met my uncle until my husband said “so they’re estranged?” when my parents didn’t invite him to our wedding 💀

I didn't have contact with my older sibling between like 2003 and 2008 because they were poor and moving around a lot. Also an uncle I didn't meet until like 2002 bc my family hated his wife. 😅

I think the biggest difference is in the past when someone moved away the other party could blame it on them or put a spin on it like, “Oh, she moved for her career and she’s SO busy!”

My family branch literally started when my great-grandmother ran away to the other side of the country to escape her family. no one really cared though bc she did it for her husband, ofc! 🤭

My uncle LIVES LESS THAN 100 MILES from our hometown. Everyone acted like he wasn't estranged, but my mom had to beg him to come to my grandma's deathbed. Over a decade later, I understand him.
