tales of earthsea is NOT a good metric! goro was basically pushed into it by studio management when he had only done backgrounds before. i agree ghibli will die with hayao but let goro live 😭

I don’t understand the urge to dislike everything that’s not miyazaki. I loved tales of earthsea. And up on poppy hill is one of my all time favorite ghibli movies.

The BEST outcome is that nobody continues the ghibli legacy, bc the alternative will likely be that after he’s gone big executives will come in and dilute it for a cash grab (kinda like SpongeBob)

No one will continue ghiblis legacy yes, but many more will be INSPIRED by ghibli and we will see Miyazakis influence across all forms of media. It won’t be the same, but different isn’t bad

I’m pretty sure his son was an engineer who got pulled to make that movie in a really unrealistic time frame. Personally, I think he did pretty good w/ what he had & was innovative considering

Goro and Hayao co-wrote From Up On Poppy Hill tho which is really good. Goro’s really only made 2 films on his own and it’s not like Hayao was successful right from the start either.

I don't think anyone could ever replicate his story telling but honestly that's a good thing. I hope that ghibli as a studio continues to make movies, but instead of trying to duplicate his work

Thinking about how yoshifumi kondo would’ve likely succeeded him but died suddenly in 1998. His movies were amazing. Directed whisper of the heart and was animation director for some big hits

I honestly don’t want someone trying to replicate Miyazaki’s work. I’d rather see a new legacy born upon his departure. He’ll pass the torch of creativity to the next person but not his legacy.

fun fact: the actually translation of the Japanese title for the boy and the heron is "How do you Live" WHICH MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE FOR THE MOVIE AND IT MAKES ME REALLY MAD THAT THEY MADE IT SO DIF

My dad brought back an OG copy of Spirited Away from Japan when I was a baby. I’ve been raised on Miyazaki my whole life and literally no one could replace him in my eyes 🙏
