In the wild, birds have access to thousands of different perches and their wild caught food is tougher than captive bred food. Rain helps soften the keratin so it can wear down more easily. All that helps keep the beak and talons in shape in the wild. In captivity we have to cope their beaks and talons to remove the overgrown keratin and keep them healthy and strong. Talons that are overgrown can pierce the foot and cause an infection. Overgrown beaks make it difficult for the birds to tear their prey. In addition to being a licensed wildlife rehabber, I am also a licensed vet tech. I am trained in how to properly maintain beaks and talons on captive birds. I have my finger in her mouth so I can work on her upper and lower mandible. I hold her tongue out of the way so it doesn’t get in the way of the dremel. I know that a dremel can heat up. We change out the tips as needed when it gets too warm The dremel is on a low speed and the tip actually touches my finger often while coping, so I know right away if the tip needs changing. We are federally licensed by the USFWS to possess eagles and other birds of prey for the purpose of rehabilitation and education.
