I’m an academic. College has become a trade school that doesn’t teach a trade.

Traditional work is working the same job as you father and his father before him. We’re talking about clock makers, smiths, cobblers, farmers, ranchers, and all the other labors. Kinda crazy how it switched around in our modern times. My family used to have a generational dairy farm but they sold the land and joined the military cuz of 9/11. Now I live in the suburbs and I go to college :(

I love the terminology of buying a degree because people never see it that way

Unless you are the owner of the company you are NOT becoming a millionaire in trade work. You might make a decent income but also you will be doing hard labor you can't do into older ages

I used to work in HVAC.
The owner of the company is a millionaire, the foremen made 60-75k, everyone doing the actual work was making 25-30k.
The knowledge is worth far more than the labor.

as a blue collar worker I can say trade school is not a bad option. I agree a better informed decision should be made, but alot of trades won't hire without certs

I do agree that people shouldn’t decide on a life long career before their brains are fully developed. It’s free for my son to get his core curriculum at a community college b/c of where we live. 1/2

as a Gen z who did go to college, I admit it was totally worth it for the experience and extra information for my life, but as far as jobs go... I can work till I die or become an entrepreneur.

Traditional employment was based on trades and apprenticeship in a trade, often father to son, or in farming, managing a farm owner by the higher echelons of society.
