@thesnakesaidtotheriver: ✨🏰This marvelous passage from a Medieval herbary describes how witches used the herb Vervain for magic and medicine. 🏰The classic Medieval herbary “De virivus herbarum” was written sometime between the 9th and the 12th century, by a scholar who called themself Macer Floridus. It’s believed that this was the pen name of a French doctor named Odo de Meung-sur-Loire, who likely lived in the 11th century. “Macer Floridus” wrote their original text in Latin, but it seems that the text became quite popular, as it was translated into Middle English and many other languages throughout the High Middle Ages. The Middle English version I’m reciting here comes from the manuscript Hunter MS 497. A facsimile of this wonderful manuscript is available online through The Málaga Corpus of Late Middle English Scientific Prose. Many thanks to them! ✨I can’t express how happy it made me to see witches cited as reputable sources for the medicinal properties and uses of herbs in such an ancient text. Witches, wise-women, medicine-women, cunning women have long been healers for their communities; the ones who were turned to in times of need; the ones have carried plant lore and knowledge through the ages since time immemorial, helping to build the medicinal foundation that has led to modern medicine… not to mention the continued wonders of plant medicine. #medieval #middleenglish #oldenglish #herbary #plantlore #plantmedicine #witches #witch #witchy #witchtok #halloween
