@drjoe_md: Small air bubbles in an IV line generally do not pose a significant danger because the body can absorb small amounts of air without causing harm. It would take a considerably larger volume of air, typically around 50 to 100 milliliters, injected rapidly into the venous system to cause an air embolism, which can obstruct blood flow and lead to serious complications. Medical professionals ensure that air is minimized in IVs, but small bubbles are usually not a cause for concern. #nursingstudent #ivtherapy #ivhydration #medical #healthandwellness
I had an air embolism, woke up on a ventilator, don’t recommend. From a central line..

Okay, but wouldn't the air eventually add up to 50ml? We shouldn't allow any bubbles in IVs

Mike StudentMD :
Yep. It’s about 30-60ml of air can cause an air embolism. Little air will have to effect. Like the cardiac bubble study. 👍🏻

I have literally had a panic attack during an IV and made my nurse remove the bubbles 😂

The smallest air bubble can cause an embolism because I lack the capillary connections (yes really). It's such a pain getting nurses to take it seriously cuz they're used to anatomically normal ppl 🫠

The story is a little different if you have a hole in your heart (PFO). It’s a low percentage of people but still 😭

If u straiten out the line, hold it firm and play it like a gitar string a few times... The bubbels goes up in the bag. And no bubbles in the line😉

I watched an air bubble go past the little thing that lets the air bubbles out, started having a panic attack and screaming and pinching the line to try to stop it flowing, and created more small

Priming technique minimizes almost all bubbles like that. Gotta consider the anxiety of the patient as well, but I’m always open to pt education. 😂

I had a full line primed while attached to my port. Thank God I had the sense to clamp the line.
