Robert Oppenheimer- (1904–1967) was an American theoretical physicist known as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his key role in the development of the first nuclear weapon. He was the scientific director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, the main research center of the Manhattan Project, a secret project led by the United States during World War II to create an atomic bomb. What is the Manhattan Project? The Manhattan Project was a secret project started in 1942 by the United States, with support from the United Kingdom and Canada, to develop an atomic bomb. The project was launched in response to concerns that Nazi Germany might be developing nuclear weapons. Some important facts about the Manhattan project 1. Main location : The main laboratory for this project was in Los Alamos, New Mexico, under the leadership of Oppenheimer.
