Literally pay it forward chains are doing nothing. All the people in the line are there because they can pay and expect to pay, it’s just annoying, not an act of charity

paying it forward is something you choose to do because it makes you feel good to do it, it should never be an imposed obligation

I work as a barista and can confirm pay it forwards are a PAIN to deal with. I have one customer that tries to start them but never tips us workers that have to deal with it. 😓

when I was a barista I literally never gave them the option to pass it on. I said "hey the car in front of you paid for your order! have a great day!" no obligation, plus it ends the PIF.

Lady JadeMaster :
feeling obligated to "pay it forward" ruins the surprise of someone else paying for you. It's no longer a nice gesture. I'd rather just buy my own stuff in that case.

My barista has straight up told me that the car behind me got a much larger order than mine & and said if she were me that she would end the streak

Ya there’s paying for a coffee and there’s buying a breakfast combo for a family of 9. There’s limits to this kindness. Not an asshole

My favorite weird pay it forward nonsense was a person who went “I’m so thankful to you for working today on thanksgiving! I’m gonna pay for the car behind me!” (1)

I would not be paying any bills like that 😳 I could maybe be like I'll pay for 1 coffee but not a full tables full of coffee but I would not anyway as I can't afford to so would just be like no I can

Would the cashier like to pay for the $42 since they’re feeling so generous?

Absolutely not! $42 is insane unless that is your choice

I never trust pay it forward stuff because people could be setting it up so their larger order gets paid for by someone else. (One car enters while another waits for someone to be in the middle)

As a former Starbucks barista, it’s a nightmare to deal with PIF lines! We would always be relieved when someone broke the chain.

I only pay for the car behind me when it’s MY idea. Otherwise it has no meaning.

No way!!! $40?? That's someone's coffee budget for the whole month! One free coffee for the price of NO more coffee for the month?? yikes

Not at all. I paid it forward to person when I was in a Tim Hortons line. I didn’t expect person to pay it forward to someone else you do it because you want to

As a Starbucks worker for 10 years (before I became a SAHM) I secretly hated the pay it forward trend. I would straight up tell people, “Your order was $5. The order behind you is over $20. We won’t judge you for not paying it forward. And yeah, it does make it hard for the staff.
