The president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said Tuesday that both major political parties in the U.S. have work to do to win over voters. Sean O'Brien told Geoff Bennett that the Democratic Party “forgot who they represented.” “I think the Democrats were too focused on social issues, which are very important. But our members were more concerned about the economic issues,” he said. “The Democrats seemed to– wanted to tell people how they should vote. And my membership is very active, they're very intelligent, and people don't like to be told what to do.” Yet, O’Brien said, Republicans made a lot of promises during the 2024 presidential election. “They made promises that they wanted to be the party for the working-class people,” he said, referring to the GOP. “So we're going to have the ability to work and hopefully rebuild a Democratic Party that once represented the core values of working people, and also work in conjunction with Republicans.” The Teamsters president also praised the number of Democratic senators who voted to confirm Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Trump’s secretary of labor. O'Brien became the first Teamsters leader to speak at a Republican National Convention when he spoke to delegates gathered in Milwaukee last summer. He used his primetime address to say American workers are being taken advantage of and encourage cooperation among Democrats, Republicans and independents. The labor organization declined to formally endorse Donald Trump or Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election, despite internal polling that showed a majority of its members backed Trump. #teamsters #union #Trump #news #politics
