If your child has ADHD and bedtime feels like a nightly battle, their sleep deserves a closer look. ADHD and sleep can have a complicated relationship. Some children with ADHD find it incredibly difficult to wind down at night. They may struggle with transitions, emotional regulation, sensory input and switching from a highly stimulating day into the quiet needed for sleep. There’s also evidence that some children with ADHD can have differences in their circadian rhythm and a tendency towards delayed sleep timing, making falling asleep difficult even when parents feel like they’re doing everything right. But it works in the other direction too. Poor sleep can make daytime symptoms harder. A tired child may be more impulsive, emotional, hyperactive and have greater difficulty regulating frustration and attention. So when we look at sleep in a child with ADHD, we want to ask more than “What time are they going to bed?” Are they taking a long time to fall asleep? Are they waking throughout the night? Do they snore or mouth breathe? Are they restless or kicking their legs? Could low iron be contributing to restless legs? Are anxiety, reflux, eczema, pain or constipation disturbing their sleep? Are they overstimulated late in the day? Sometimes improving sleep means looking for the things that may be disrupting it, rather than simply trying to get a child into bed earlier. At Nourishing Apothecary, Lainie is our paediatric naturopath and homeopath with a special interest in supporting children with ADHD and autism. She takes a whole-child approach and looks at sleep alongside nutrition, gut health, nervous system regulation and the individual factors affecting your child. You can start with a free discovery call with Lainie, and all consultations are available Australia-wide via Zoom. www.nourishingapothecary.com #ADHDKids #ADHDSleep #ChildrensHealth #PaediatricNaturopath #NourishingApothecary
