Naturally, we get dressed from the inside out, meaning when we come to layering, we’re starting with one layer without a clear direction of where the outfit is going. This can be pretty overwhelming and lead to making the mistake of starting with a stunning base layer and then having to hide it to stay warm or simply not having the right pieces to layer over it. Shifting your mindset by planning your outfit from the outside in can combat this. It may seem kinda obvious but it took me years to start implementing this into how I get dressed every morning. For example, if you know it’s cold enough to need a jacket, start with your jacket and work backwards. Since most of us have far less coats & jackets than tops, shirts, trousers, dresses etc, it’s a way less overwhelming place to start and means our options widen as we go rather than narrow. Layering under instead of over can also mean you reach more for the pieces you don’t love because you might love them when they’re layered under something else. Of course, you don’t need to follow this rule religously and there are cases where I elevate an outfit by layering over something instead of under. In these cases I think of the layers more as accessories, it’s more of a style angle than a ‘I need to stay warm’ angle. When dressing for colder weather, knowing I need a coat / knit I find this is super helpful to simplify the layering process and make decisions less overwhelming! xx #LearnOnTikTok #fashionhacks #stylingtipps #howtolayer #layeringtoner
