Last week, we were invited to the premiere of Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy on Netflix - and having never been to a premiere before, we couldn’t say no! With Black Friday and Christmas shopping in full swing, the timing couldn’t have been better. The documentary serves as a good reminder of just how easy it is to overconsume, especially when big brands manipulate us through clever marketing, design and storytelling - often with no consideration for the planet. It sheds light on the impact of what we buy and drives home the point that there’s really no such thing as ‘away’ when a product reaches the end of its life. Since watching it, we’re spending more time at local markets, supporting crafters, and trying to choose gifts with more thought and intention. It also reminded us of the 5 R’s - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Recycle, and that they are in that order for a reason. It’s so easy for us to see a recycling logo and feel guilt-free, thinking the item will magically be transformed into something new. But in reality, recycling should only ever be a last resort when the other options aren’t possible. It’s disheartening to realise just how much of what we buy is designed to be obsolete within a few years - or deliberately made to be unfixable to force us into buying replacements. That’s why it was so cool to see companies like iFixit featured, and that even when faced with these challenges and having huge corporations breathing down their necks, they are constantly sharing ways to repair and extend the life of what we own instead of just replacing it. So if you’re looking for a thoughtful nudge to rethink how and why we consume, we’d definitely recommend giving it a watch. It’s made us approach this time of year a little differently and for the better. 🌍 #buynow #netflix #reducereuserecycle
