First a disclaimer! the best potting media for YOU is the one best suited towards YOUR conditions and YOUR habits! That being said, these substrates are what I use to create my own mix and seem to be working well for anthurium, philodendron, and alocasia so far! I hope you enjoyed getting a look at the sort of stuff I use and found this to be informative! Happy Friday! *Please wear an N95 mask when working with potting mixes. Exposure to these dusts/particulants/organisms can lead to lung disease over time* For moisture-retention: I prefer to use NZ tree fern fiber as the base for my mix. It provides a light, airy, moisture-retaining base. For additional moisture retention, I use coco chips, which are like little woody sponges, + chopped sphagnum moss. Overall I try to aim for 40-50% of my mix being these moisture retaining substrates. For airiness: I use LECA, orchid bark, perlite/pumice, charcoal chips. LECA provides a nice chunky texture, orchid bark is a great organic chunky additive and also helps with pH balance. For perlite/pumice, I try to use a gradient of sizing. I don’t know if charcoal chips do anything, but I honestly just like how it looks 😆️. I like around 50% of my mix to be chunky/quick-draining. More recently I started adding a small amount of organic material (earthworm castings) into my mixes. This is just to act as a low baseline level of nutrients. I still fertilize regularly with waterings and I think this is very much optional. More about what I mean by adjusting your potting mix to your needs! If you tend to dislike watering and let your plants go a long time without water, up the proportion of moisture-retaining substrates. On the other hand, if you tend to be a very frequent waterer, increase the amount of chunky materials. If your climate is very hot/dry, increase the moisture-retaining parts and if your climate is more humid/mild, try to go more chunky. #aroidsoftiktok #aroidaddicts #pottingmix #repotting #soilmix #aroidmix #houseplantsmakemehappy #houseplantsmakepeoplehappy #planttipsandtricks #urbanjungleblogger #urbanjungle #indoorgardening #houseplanttips #urbanjungle #plantparenthood #crazyplantrichasian #plantparent #plantreels #aroidlover #plantlover #plantlovers
