Oct 29th 1969 ARPANET the precursor to the internet created!#internet #www #Science #History #technology ARPANET: The Beginning of the Internet ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was the experimental computer network developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1960s that laid the foundation for the modern Internet. How it began During the Cold War, the United States wanted to advance computer research and enable scientists at different universities and research institutions to share expensive computing resources. The Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) funded the project. At the time, computers generally operated independently. ARPANET introduced a revolutionary approach called packet switching, which divided information into small packets that could travel across a network and be reassembled at their destination. Key milestones * 1966: ARPA began organizing the project under computer scientist Bob Taylor, with Larry Roberts leading much of the network’s development. * October 29, 1969: The first ARPANET message was sent from UCLA to the Stanford Research Institute. The intended word was LOGIN, but the system crashed after transmitting only “LO.” * 1971: Ray Tomlinson developed network email, quickly becoming one of the network’s most popular applications. * 1973: ARPANET made international connections, including to institutions in the United Kingdom and Norway. * 1974: Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn published a proposal for the protocols that evolved into TCP/IP, allowing different computer networks to communicate. * January 1, 1983: ARPANET switched to TCP/IP, a major milestone in the development of the Internet. * 1990: ARPANET was officially decommissioned as newer networks took over its role. Why ARPANET mattered ARPANET was not the Internet as we know it today, and it was not originally designed simply to let the public browse websites. It began as a government-funded research project that connected computers at universities and research facilities. Its networking methods and protocols helped make a global Internet possible. DARPA +1 One important distinction: The World Wide Web came later. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee proposed the Web, which introduced a system for linking and accessing information through web pages. The Internet is the underlying network; the Web is one of the services that runs on it. HISTORY +1 In short: ARPANET began as a small American research network in 1969 and helped create the technological foundation for a worldwide communications system that transformed business, science, education, and everyday life.
