The remains of Rosehaugh House, located on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands. The property has been documented since the 14th century as one of the estates of the regionally dominant Mackenzies. In the 1660s the lands were acquired by Sir George Mackenzie, a prominent lawyer and politician also known as “Bluidy Mackenzie" for his role in the persecution of Covenanters. In 1790 Sir Roderick Mackenzie built the first substantial house on the site of Rosehaugh. However, following bankruptcy in 1864, the last MacKenzie laird was forced out, and Rosehaugh was sold to James Fletcher, a successful Dundee industrialist. James immediately embarked on schemes of reclamation and improvement on a massive and expensive scale. In 1885 Rosehaugh was inherited by James’ son, James Douglas Fletcher. He commissioned architect William Flockhart who transformed Rosehaugh into a grand mansion showcasing a blend of Scots Baronial and Gothic architectural styles, making it a striking example of Victorian opulence. During both World Wars, the house and estate played roles in the war efforts, with parts of the estate being used for agriculture and the house itself being requisitioned for military use. In 1927 James Fletcher died but his widow, Lillian, lived on at Rosehaugh until her death in 1953. In the post-war years economic difficulties and changing social conditions led to the decline of many large estates in Scotland, including Rosehaugh. Consequently, Rosehaugh was eventually sold by Lillian’s heirs to the Eagle Star Insurance company who sold off the contents and fittings. An attempt was made to sell the house itself but, despite interest from Butlins, there were no buyers and in 1958 Eagle Star decided to demolish Rosehaugh. Today the grand scale and setting of Rosehaugh can be seen from the terrace on which it stood. Many of the estate buildings have also survived including the stables and lodges which have undergone restoration. #highlands #Scotland #history #castle #explore #fyp #Love #scottishtiktok #beauty #love #foryoupage #inspiration #education #conservation #historytime #historytok #castles #castlesofscotland #abandoned #viral #travel
