Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, announced Wednesday that he is ending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. “It’s clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I’m suspending my campaign for president of the United States,” he said in Windham, New Hampshire. Mr. Christie, who had been the most vocal critic of former President Trump in the field, acknowledged that the announcement would disappoint his supporters, but said “it’s the right thing to do.” “I want to promise you this: I am going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be president of the United States again — and that’s more important than my own personal ambition,” he said. Mr. Christie, who invested heavily in the Granite State, failed to gain significant traction among Republican voters, while GOP rival Nikki Haley has considerably cut into Mr. Trump’s lead in the state. According to FiveThirtyEight’s average of polls, Mr. Trump has about 42% support in New Hampshire compared to 30% for Ms. Haley and 11% for Mr. Christie. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have trailed with single digit support in the state and have instead gone all in on Iowa, which holds its first-in-the-nation caucus on Monday. New Hampshire’s Republican primary will be held on Jan. 23. It’s not clear if Mr. Christie will endorse Ms. Haley in a bid to consolidate the anti-Trump vote. He was caught on a hot mic earlier in the day saying “she’s going to get smoked” and that “she’s not up to this.” #chrischristie #christie #election2024 #trump #nikkihaley #rondesantis #vivekramaswamy #newhampshire #cspan
