Working through emotional eating 101 Whether it’s stress, sadness, joy, frustration, or any other emotions, eating and emotions go hand in hand for so many of us. For me, sadness or depression triggered a lot of my emotional eating, among other not so great behaviors. Emotional eating is really tough and can seem impossible to get away from. Most of us were conditioned from a young age to associate food with a wide variety of emotions from cake to celebrate birthdays, ice cream after something sad happened, or food incentives for certain behaviors or things we didn’t want to do. After decades, it can be really hard to break a lot of these habits. So where do we even start to try to break the cycle of emotional eating? Here are a few tips. Please keep in mind, this is not medical advice, and please seek out professional help in the case of an eating disorder. 1. 5 minute pause practice This is one of my favorites. Whenever you feel the desire to emotionally eat, set a timer for 5 minutes and journal, breathe, or just sit in silence for that time. There is no judgment what happens after those 5 minutes, but a lot of times the desire to emotionally eat will pass and/or you will come back into a parasympathetic state (relaxed) where you are able to think through what you really want to do versus an impulse reaction. 2. Identify which emotions cause the desire to eat/where they came from Identifying where, why, and how these habits formed can be really helpful. Did your parent(s) give you sweets to try and cheer you up as a child? Did you get pizza to celebrate special occasions or accomplishments? Digging deeper into why you have these strong connections with certain emotions and food can be really helpful to better understand yourself and often give yourself some slack and not be so hard on yourself. Breaking patterns is really hard, but understanding where they came from and why we have them is a really good first step to changing them. 3. Is there something else that can also feel good during this time? Whatever the emotion(s) that triggers the eating, is there something else that could also feel good or help? This can take some time and trial and error to figure out some different things that may also feel good instead of the emotional eating. Could a walk clear your head when you are stressed? How about a hot bath when you feel sad? 4. Set up a barrier Setting up a barrier can also be a helpful strategy. Once again, there’s no judgment to the action, but you can make it a little harder for you to get to your go-to foods. Can you not keep it in the house, so you have to drive/walk somewhere to get it? What about keeping single servings in the house vs larger quantities or even just getting a single serving if you choose to go get the food? What if you had to share that food with your kids when you wanted it? These are just a few examples of how you can make it a little bit harder for you to get to your go to emotional eating foods. Please keep in mind, changing these habits don’t happen overnight. They take time and patience. Don’t be hard on yourself, and, just because you didn’t make the decision you maybe wanted to once, doesn’t mean you can’t try again the next time! #emotionaleater #weightlossjouney #weightloss
