This 500 year old building on Edinburgh's Royal Mile infamous as John Knox's House, however, that name is a wee bit misleading. It's true that the famous preacher may have died here, but he could only have lived here for a short time. The initials above the door tell us who it was really home to during Knox's life - James Mossman and Mariota Arres. Mossman was from a family of goldsmiths and his father designed the crown that you can see in Edinburgh Castle for James V. Mossman carried on that royal connection, crafting jewellery for Mary Queen of Scots and as a stout Catholic, he definitely wouldn't have gotten along with John Knox! After Mary had been forced to abdicate, her goldsmith was one of those holding Edinburgh Castle in her name. Along with another goldsmith, Mossman minted coins for Mary's loyal forces while besieged in the castle. In the meantime, John Knox is said to have moved into his home on the Royal Mile, although only for a few months before dying here in 1572. The next year, the seige was successful, Mary's followers surrendered and James Mossman was executed for counterfeiting. Over time, even with James and Mariota's initials above the door, the building became known as the John Knox House. That's good news for us since hardly any other parts of Old Edinburgh have survived from that time. After the wealthy moved into the New Town, many old buildings on the Royal Mile were torn down due to safety and sanitation concerns. Because of John Knox's association, this building survived, bought by the Church of Scotland and preserved by Lord Cockburn (of Cockburn Street fame), who had a love of old architecture. The windows you see on the ground floor are known as Luckenbooths and while the Mossman goldsmiths would have used one to sell their wares, the others were rented out to other traders. A different meaning to the term "window shopping"! Running around the building, those words read in Scots "Love God above all and your neighbour as yourself" which is a motto more people should have lived by during the troubled times of John Knox and James Mossman! #Scotland #Edinburgh #VisitScotland #ScotlandIsNow #visitedinburgh
