ad €2 drinks AND free food?! 🤯 This place gives you FREE FOOD with your drinks. And the more you drink, the better the food gets. We’re not talking about a small plate of salted nuts here, but heaping plates of grilled octopus, fresh oysters, a whole grilled fish, and king prawns with feta … and the best thing is, the drinks aren’t expensive either, starting from 2 euros a pop! I’m currently travelling around Greece with my boyfriend, and we’re in the coastal city of Volos with his family and friends. Tsipouro is an integral part of the culture here. It’s a drink made from pomace (the pulpy remains from the grape pressing process) and has an alcohol content of 40 to 45%, so it’s strong but OH SO aromatic and one to sip slowly, with ice and water. Every tsipourádiko, a tsipouro taverna, will have its own identity—one will specialise in grilled seafood, the other fried; one might favour traditional Greek dishes, the other modernised. This tradition dates back to the 19th century when these tavernas were born from workers who needed a hangout spot at lunch; they were originally served in thimbles! Later, shop owners and fishermen from the Asia Minor introduced their local cuisine and catches of the day to mix. Now, it’s the life and soul of the city. You’ll find three generations shuffled around the table with their besties and partners, like me, about to be initiated into the culture. Plates are piled up, strangers become friends, and more drinks are brought out. There are over 600 of them in Volos, so you’ll never run out of ones to visit. However, according to my boyfriend’s mum (who owns and runs her own restaurant), this is one of the best! Now, when I say small plates, I mean sharing plates, as we’re in Greece after all. The portions are generous, and the hospitality is next level. As you can tell, I’m ecstatic to be back in Greece with @visitgreecegr.
