They leave Sir Agravaine behind to spy on the lovers, and “to take them with the deed”: to catch them in the act. 🖤In the short, frantic scene I recite in this video, Guinevere and Lancelot have realized that a trap has been set for them. Lancelot visits the Queen in her chamber, formally greeting her on bended knee as a gesture of love. They hurriedly discuss the perils of their situation and Lancelot resolves to leave Camelot immediately in order to save them both. Miserably, Guinevere says, “Yes, swiftly arm yourself- delaying our parting only increases its pain.” When this scene is over, Lancelot leaves the castle and makes his way to the tournament; but so broken-hearted is he to be parted from Guinevere, that he goes in disguise, so that he doesn’t have to face or speak to anyone. A total mess. 🏰The transcription I’ve used here comes from “Le morte Arthur, a romance in stanzas of eight lines ; re-edited from ms. Harley 2252, in the British museum ; with introduction, notes, glossary, and index of names, by J.
