The name Njomoko, now commonly known as Jomoko, has its roots in the story of a man from Gakoe in Gatundu North called Elijah Muhuhuko. In the 1970s, 1980s and into the early 1990s, Elijah worked as a matatu conductor on the Thika–Gakoe route, now part of the TKN Sacco route. Those who knew him back then remember him as a very funny man. He had a way of making passengers laugh, and he was well liked because, despite his jokes, he was not the type to insult people. Elijah had one particular word that he used all the time: Njomoko. He said it so often that people eventually started calling him Njomoko. Njomoko is a Kikuyu word that can mean something protruding, sticking out or coming up prominently. When Elijah eventually stopped working as a conductor, he started a matatu stage along Thika Road at the Mang'u turn-off. The stage became a convenient point for people travelling from the Mang'u–Kamwangi side. Instead of going all the way to Thika Town to get a matatu to Nairobi, passengers could alight at the turn-off and get another matatu there. Elijah's job was to help fill matatus going to Nairobi and those heading towards the Mang'u side. Because everyone knew him as Njomoko, the stage soon became known as kwa Njomoko. If you were coming from Nairobi and wanted to get off at the Mang'u turn-off, the conductor would tell the driver, “Weka kwa Njomoko.” With time, people simply started saying “Njomoko” instead of “kwa Njomoko.” The name gradually stopped referring only to Elijah and became what people used for the stage and the area. Today, most people know the place as Jomoko. Google Maps and other navigation platforms commonly use the spelling Jomoko, and that has become the spelling most people now use. However, the older spelling, Njomoko, is still in use. The best part of the story is that Elijah Muhuhuko is still alive and well. He is now a farmer, and if you go to Gakoe Shopping Centre in the afternoon, you will often find him there. He is a very cool man, but don't let the calmness fool you. Once he starts cracking his jokes, you will understand why people loved him during his matatu days. Story as told by @waweru joseph
