Later South Slavic traditions offer fascinating clues about the sacred and symbolic role of drums. Bulgarian Nestinarstvo is a fire-walking tradition where sacred drumming accompanies ecstatic states and ritual, while Macedonian Teškoto is a powerful men’s dance where the lead dancer may even balance on the drum. Some scholars have interpreted these traditions through a shamanic lens, but that does not make them evidence of ancient Slavic shamanism. We should also be careful with the words “shaman” and “shamanism.” They were not terms used within historical Slavic pagan vocabulary, and shamanism describes a much broader and more complex set of traditions than simply drumming, trance or ecstatic dance.
