Louis Vuitton may have won in court, but it appears to be losing public support in China. In May 2025, LV sued Chinese tea chain Molly Tea over its four-petal logo. More than a year later, a Suzhou court ruled that the design infringed seven of LV’s registered trademarks, ordering Molly Tea to stop using it and pay 10.3 million yuan—around $1.5 million. But critics argue that LV’s own four-petal motif was inspired by the baoxiang flower (宝相花), a traditional Chinese pattern dating back more than 1,000 years. Chinese social media users are now comparing LV’s monogram with similar designs found on Tang Dynasty instruments, ancient murals, temple carvings and Suzhou garden windows. Many accuse LV of trying to monopolise part of China’s cultural heritage, while scholars are questioning whether modern trademark law should allow ancient cultural symbols to become commercially controlled.
