@signed.drj: Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t have a life as a doctor. 👩🏾⚕️👑 Doctors need a life and can travel the world! So please do not be discouraged - you just need to be organised about it. For me, it is so important that I am able to travel, spend time with my family and friends& explore other countries, so I’ve found a way to make it work. Here are 5 helpful tips to help plan your travel as a doctor 👩🏾⚕️ 1. Plan in Advance: As a doctor, your schedule is controlled by work which can be annoying but you should have your rota at least 6 weeks before starting. So check when you are on-call and plan your trips well in advance to secure time off. If possible, block out travel dates when rota planning begins - some departments may contact you before. 2. Utilize Zero Days: Schedule trips around your zero days—days off before or after night shifts—to extend your holiday time without taking extra leave. These periods often give you more flexibility and feel like “bonus” time off. Work hard but make sure you play hard too. 3. Weekend Getaways: Short weekend trips are a great way to recharge without taking leave. Explore destinations that are a quick flight or train ride away to make the most of limited time. Staycations or short city breaks are also a great shout and I did lots of this year! 4. Combine Annual Leave with Public Holidays: Stretch your time off by booking leave around bank holidays or long weekends. This can give you extended breaks while saving your leave days for bigger trips. Here are some bank holidays: 1. New Year’s Day – Wednesday, January 1st 2. Good Friday – Friday, April 18th 3. Easter Monday – Monday, April 21st 4. Early May Bank Holiday – Monday, May 5th 5. Spring Bank Holiday – Monday, May 26th 6. Late Summer Bank Holiday – Monday, August 25th (except Scotland) 7. Christmas Day – Thursday, December 25th 8. Boxing Day – Friday, December 26th 5. Maximize Your Annual Leave: Instead of taking just one long break, consider spreading out your annual leave over shorter trips throughout the year. This helps avoid burnout while giving you multiple chances to refresh. But sometimes you need that whole week off so take it! 💕
