Military Assistance Command, Vietnam- Studies & Observation Group or MACV-SOG was a highly top secret unit made up primarily of Green Berets from 5th Special Forces Group and indigenous troops that they trained. They conducted an 8 year secret war inside of Laos, Cambodia, North & South Vietnam. Their primary mission was reconnaissance deep inside enemy territory where teams of 4-8 soldiers would insert by any means (sea, air, or land), locate enemy troops and supplies and annihilate them. In one case, Thanksgiving Day in 1968, 6 man Spike Team Idaho ran by 1-0 John Stryker Meyer (pictured in the 4th slide) came across and ambushed 30,000 NVA and narrowly escaped by seconds before being completely overun. SOG’s secondary missions would be Bright Lights where they would rescue POW’s, downed pilots, or other recon teams who were ambushed. They also conducted Bomb Damage Assessments after B-52 strikes, wire taps into enemy communications, Eldest Son missions where they placed explosives ammo into enemy caches so when they shot, their guns would explode causing psychological warfare against the NVA. Then finally they would snatch up prisoners along the Ho Chi Minh trail and bring them back for interrogation. During the units 8 years they racked numerous records, they have the highest k/d ratio in US military history at 157:1 while also having a 100+% casualty rate. Everyone who served in the unit was atleast wounded once or killed, most notable would be Medal of Honor recipient Roy P. Benavidez who received 37 gunshot, shrapnel, and bayonet wounds and Medal of Honor recipient Bob Howard, who received 14 Purple Hearts and is the most decorated soldier in US history. SOG per capita has the highest amount of Medal of Honor recipients. Honestly everyone in that unit should’ve received it but with it being Top Secret a lot of awards were downgraded so the public wouldn’t know about the unit. Only 500-700 men ever ran recon missions for SOG while another 2,000 ran Search and Destroy missions in SOG’s Hachet Force (similar to the modern day 75th Ranger Regiment).
