Jono/Jonathan 🍉 :
The rhetoric of poverty as an individual moral failure rather than a systemic attribute of the current system allows people to ignore the cause and blame individuals. It’s not good.

Also: when money is tight, the car is one of the first things to get paid. You can live in your car but you can’t drive your apartment to work

I had a great job until I was injured last year. my nice car was just paid off before I lost my job.

My Boomer parents love to talk about the vehicles and phones of their “poor” coworkers and employees. They think they’re all scammers and liars. No critical thinking skills.

It takes 7 years to pay off a car nowadays. A lot of 💩 can go wrong in 7 years. They could live in that car if worse came to worse.

Waiting until people have nothing makes their recovery soooo much harder. It’s likely cheaper to give benefits early and repeatedly than late and forever.

another viewpoint. the person with the nice car could be buying food FOR someone who is housebound or otherwise unable to do it themselves

Plus, used luxury cars get really inexpensive around the 7-8 year age mark, and I think most people are only aware of the brand and not the model year of a car and assume it was bought new.

When my dad walked out on his wife & 6 kids, we needed food stamps. Our home had nice furniture. We had a decent car. We didn’t have actual money for food.

I've worked at a food pantry and you'll see the whole spectrum. I try to keep it simple. I don't need your story – if you ask me for food, I'll give it to you. I'll leave the judgement part to God.

Worth noting also that it may be difficult or impossible to get your equity out of a nice car and get a cheaper car without being penalized by the program.

I was laid off for the first time in my career after 30 years. I was eligible for food stamps at one point but was able to get another job. I understand this completely! Thank you.

my wife and I were able to finance a great new car at 1.9% rate back in 2021, if we lost both of our jobs we’d keep it cuz those deals are damn near nonexistent now, plus we need a car where we live

We got an EBT card after suffering a huge flood in our home 11 years ago. It was a lifeline for sure. You never know what people are going through

Back when I was in severe poverty, friends would lend me their cars to grocery shop because I didn't have one. People assume too much narrative from appearances.

When my family was on benefits, we were gifted a car by family. Lifesaver for us, no way we could have bought it on our own

Volunteering at a food pantry, I saw everyone come in. Even a high school pal who became a lawyer, due to sudden separation she had no money for food until next paycheck. Poverty can hit sudden & bad!

The examples were a freshmen year sociology example: may have borrowed car, may have purchased before current situation. Don’t draw a conclusion from incomplete data.

Such a powerful presentation! I volunteer at a food shelf and I get the car statement all the time. Thanks for educating me on how I could respond!

I LOVE your videos, Dr. Edwards! You share info that can be hard to grasp/quantify in a clear & objective way. You make us look at these topics and challenge our assumptions. Keep the videos coming!

Thank you from a social worker who has accompanied the people in your scenarios, and many more. I have so much respect for economists who provide us a systems understanding of poverty. Thank you for all you do.

Even if they were to trade in that nice car, how are they supposed to qualify for a new loan on a cheaper car with NO INCOME?!?!?!? 🤯

I was broke af and the only gift I was ever given was a new car from my grandmother, that lead me down a path of fixing my credit and buying a home 6 years later- without her help and car I’d fail
