@relationshipswithaly: “No wrong answer…did you?” Why does this work?? 👉 Sometimes defensiveness is a result of feeling like you’re always getting it wrong, so when your partner asks you a question you just assume it’s because you’ve messed up in some way. If your partner is assuming that you’re attacking them or accusing them, try adding “no wrong answer” before your question. This allows them to answer without feeling like they’re on the chopping block. Of course this only works if there is ACTUALLY no wrong answer. This will build trust and help reduce those initial feelings of defensiveness that tend to come up. Try it out and let me know how it goes! Disclaimer: IG is not therapy. another reason to stay single forever, it is exhausting to have to remember the correct way to ask a question so he doesn't have a temper tantrum

There is is a difference between “did you remember to pick up tp?” And “did you pick up tp?” The first can come across more accusatory.

Actually if you don’t put something on this list say “I totally forgot to put it on the list but did you grab tp by chance?”

I sometimes do “should I do x, or did you do it already?” Not usually with my partner, usually with coworkers.

This is a good idea for people that have had trauma in the past.... And they also need to work on not feeling personally attacked all the time

this is accessibility, because you KNOW that defensiveness was learned. PTSD makes some of us hair-trigger snappy, so we appreciate the reminder that we're not being judged or evaluated.

Lots of people don't want to admit that their partner is defensive because they've been highly critical of them in the past. Always look in the mirror first

it's helpful for ppl like me who have a hard time knowing if we are in trouble or not. I also like hand off conversations. like, here's everything that's left to do or going on.

Counter argument: the person asking the question should lead with an admission of forgetting to write something down, which was the pre-existing condition for the other person to do that thing.

I see what you are getting at, but I think no wrong answer is a parent/teacher statement, not partner.

Its the tone with accusation in it, and then then gaslighting of im not mad that does it for me, how would remember something that I didn’t know to remember

These comments are not it... The point is to make sure you aren't using questions as a springboard into criticism. Whether or not he should have remembered TP on his own is immaterial to the top.

This doesn't work on emotionally intelligent people because they get understandably irritated that you're "handling" them

Shouldn’t the person who feels attacked over everything be the one to change and reframe their thinking? It’s not the partner’s responsibility to tip toe every time they ask a question

No I’m not gonna treat my partner like a five-year-old. I should be able to ask a question without getting anger in response

The bar is literally in the ground. Bare minimum your partner should be able to be self aware enough to answer this question without anger. Having to reframe it so your partner doesn’t flip is nuts
