When it was explained to me it was a lot darker I was told the veil between the world of the living and the dead was thin on the night of Halloween and we dressed up so that the souls that came back through the veil for that night thought you were one of them and if they didn't they could drag your souls back to the other side of the veil with them

in Denmark we have i similar day in February, where kids dress up as whatever they want, and the next day, they would go door to door and sing a song for money, its called fastelavn 😊
