Vasili Arkhipov was a Soviet naval officer credited with preventing the launch of nuclear torpedoes from a Soviet submarine during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, thereby preventing the outbreak of nuclear war. Historians call him "the man who saved the world. The B-59 was being hunted by U.S. Navy destroyers, which were dropping practice depth charges to force it to surface. Inside the submarine, the air conditioning had failed, temperatures soared over 113°Fand the crew was suffering from extreme fatigue, fear, and exhaustion. Cut off from radio contact with Moscow, the captain, Valentin Savitsky, believed that World War III had already begun and decided to launch the nuclear torpedo. While both the captain and the political officer, Ivan Maslennikov, agreed to launch the weapon, Arkhipov was the third senior officer required by protocol to authorize the attack. Despite the immense pressure from his fellow officers and the belief that they were under attack, Arkhipov remained calm and refused to authorize the launch, arguing instead that they should surface and wait for orders. Captain Savitsky ordered a nuclear torpedo launch, but Arkhipov opposed it, convincing the crew that the U.S. was signaling them, not attacking. His intervention prevented a potential nuclear conflict. #coldwar #nationalistedit #Soviet #america #History
