Romania boasts one of the largest brown bear populations in Europe, with approximately 6,000 individuals inhabiting its expansive forests. Unfortunately, the growing number of bears approaching vehicles and tourists on the Transfăgărășan highlights a troubling trend. Bears have figured out that we humans are excellent snack dispensers, but this bear buffet is leading to some serious problems. Picture a bear waddling around, thinking, “Why bother hunting when there’s a drive-thru?” Not ideal for anyone involved. Respect and caution are paramount. Always keep a safe distance from bears—never feed them or leave food out, as this disrupts their natural diet and behaviors. Secure your trash and food supplies to prevent attracting bears.
