@hedgerow_healing: 🎃 Pumpkin carving origin 🎃 Many of the Halloween traditions that are practiced today are actually much older than most of us think. We tend to consider Pumpkin carving as American, yet it originated from Ireland and Scotland from turnip carving. Halloween is of course thought to have developed from the ancient festival of Samhain/Nos Calan Gaeaf, the Celtic New Year and a celebration to honour the dead and the thinning of the veil. This is an ancient festival, and one that has been practiced in these lands for thousands of years. Traditions such as dressing up, trick or treating. and Pumpkin carving can all be traced back to this festival. The legend of the Jack O'lantern is well-known in these Celtic lands, and even though pumpkins are much easier to carve, households all across Britain and Ireland will still carve out turnips as a nod to the old ways and the old tales.
