The word "Kanjo" is a bit of a mystery to most people, and it's legendary to a few who really understand it. For almost three decades, Honda fans have been racing on an elevated highway system right in the middle of Osaka, Japan. This expressway is called the 'Kanjo Loop' because the roadways connect in a clockwise position on a loop. For most people in Osaka, it's just a way to get around the city. After hours, the story is completely different. This famous loop becomes a playground for people who like to party at midnight. Loop runners, or 'Kanjo Racers' or 'Kanjozoku' as they're also known, meet up at an unspecified location and test their skills to the limit on these highways. The roads aren't completely empty or closed off just for them to use. There are other cars on the road, including local police. The aim of the game is to avoid obstacles as you race. This activity is highly illegal. Nearly a decade ago, Kanjo racing became such a significant issue in Japan that law enforcement began to crack down on all illegal racing activities. The police started arresting enthusiasts, seizing their agile Honda cars and essentially locking down the Kanjo loop expressway. Many racers decided to leave the hobby behind, while others moved to the racetrack or simply lost interest.
