My Mimi crossed the rainbow bridge on November 8, at 3pm. The following day, I buried her in a beautiful garden surrounded by other furry friends. When Mimi was 1, I took her to the cardiologist and found out she likely had congenital heart murmur. The doctor recommended maintaining her weight, reducing her excitement levels, and watching out for her panting. It didn’t seem that serious. She was too young to be on meds. I didn’t get a second opinion, nor did I make another heart checkup in the 1.5 years that followed. I thought Mimi never showed any signs, but in reality, I failed to notice them. I thought that if I kept her happy, the problem would cease to exist. On November 5 at 3pm, I came home from lunch to take Mimi out on a car ride to the park for the first time. I put her into her bag and into my friend’s car. Usually, she would stay in her bag during the whole ride until we got to the vet/destination. But on this day, for some reason I thought it was OK to take her out of the bag immediately. I didn’t give her a moment to catch her breath, and after 10 minutes, she was panting. Her eyes were glassy. I immediately took her home to let her calm down. But after 5 minutes, she let out loud yelps, was dragging both her hind legs, and pooped on the floor. By 4pm, she was in an oxygen tank at the nearest hospital and was diagnosed with Feline Aortic Thromboembolism (FATE). She was then transferred to the ER where she would be monitored 24h for the next 3 days. I couldn’t sleep or eat. Mimi couldn’t, so why should I. She was kept stable and no longer in pain, but she was so, so tired. I wish I could have had her pain. I wish it would have been me. On November 8 at 2pm, I made the decision to bring Mimi home. She died in my arms shortly after. My angel was so brave, but in the end, her heart was too big for this world. Mimi wasn’t a family member. Mimi was part of me. She was my home, my routine, my precious angel. I loved her more than I loved myself.
