I don't have a cricut, nor a lot of money/supplies, but I have a coloured printer, so I usually make my covers in 3 pieces, front, back & spine then assemble it. Works pretty well.

other options: hand-cut the vinyl like a crazy person (it's me, I'm the crazy person), use iron on patches, embroidery, wallpaper pages from the dollar store, paint
