I read "Shogun" when it first came out (I'm 76 yo) .. loved it!! Fast forward to 2008 I happened upon "Snowflower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See and I thought of Shogun. You might enjoy it too!

Aztec by Gary Jennings is on par w shogun. Better in some ways worse in others. Excellent historical fiction
