@jeffpearlmanauthor: When John Rocker’s dad died, I sent John a sympathy card. It was self-indulgent and stupid and ridiculous. #johnrocker #atlantabraves #braves #MLB #sympathy #writetsoftiktok #journalism #letters
Personally I think that’s a very thoughtful gesture. When my Dad died an “enemy” of mine did something similar and I will love him as long as I live because of it.

I think you can make the argument that anytime you do something out of kindness, you’re also doing it for yourself.

I have similar thoughts about asking for forgiveness. I had a falling out with a friend that was like 90% my fault. Part of me wants to reach out and apologize but that’s selfish

I think this video is more self indulgent than the note to him about his dad. That’s the normal thing to do, not this !!

You feel bad?? Yet you keep talking about him and then send a sympathy card? Ok. This is about you.

men don't do cards. call... leave a message... put your hand on his shoulder and tell him you're sorry for the loss.

isn't it possible to do something for yourself AND because it may actually help someone else? Maybe John seeing an "enemy" express condolences makes him feel less alone? Just a thought

I don’t think there is anything wrong with expressing sympathy. Even to someone who you’re not on the best of terms with.

I think you did the right thing. From a good place. It may have meant a something to him. If he was offended or indifferent…no loss on you.

It’s hard to admit that deep down I am not genuine and that at times I do and say things only to produce what I want for myself .. self awareness helps
