@wordsatwork: Why is it so hard for Americans to do a good British accent? Let’s talk about what a “British accent” even is and learn about sociolinguistics! #language #english #unitedkingdom #england #Scotland #Wales #british #linguistics #interesting #educational #LearnOnTikTok
I would also argue that a good chunk of British people aren't as good at American accents as they think, they just can't pick up the subtle off bits

asymmetric intelligibility is definitely a thing for Scottish accents, even within the UK. it's a very common experience to have e.g. a Londoner struggle with your accent while you understand them

Asymmetric intelligibility is really prominent in my language, Danish, with a lot of Danes not being able to understand anyone speaking Danish with a non-Danish accent. ...including me, I'm sorry 😭

Could you please explain some of the differences between Swiss German and standard German? Most German people don‘t understand a word when they come to Switzerland and I think that‘s very interesting!

Portuguese and Spanish are kinda like that, Portuguese people are more used to the Spanish media so they can understand Spanish better than the other way around

Re asymmetric intelligibility- How you’d call Czech and Slovak? We understand each other but are not able to speak the other language (we could learn it but we never try because no need)

I grew up in Kuwait, a very very diverse country in the gulf. We have a sizable population of Arabs of diverse backgrounds so pretty good exposure to several different Arabic dialects.

Also most popular British media that becomes famous overseas, like James Bond, Harry Potter, Bridgerton, the Crown etc, have posh RP accent that aren’t too common or basically don’t exist anymore
