In that time, my oldest son went from a six-year-old kindergartner to an eleven-year-old in middle school, and my youngest from a three-year-old toddler to a nine-year-old in third grade. While we navigated the bittersweet moments of loss, we cherished many beautiful milestones, welcomed a dog into our family, took memorable vacations, and held onto each other through it all. My heart ached for another baby, a hope I shared openly with my children. They’ve walked alongside me through the highs and lows, feeling the heartbreak of our losses. Because of this, they have a deeper understanding of life’s fragility, and though I wish they hadn’t had to bear such a weight, I know they’ll one day be more prepared to support others facing similar pain. Even now, they ask me almost daily, “Is the baby still with us?” And while my heart breaks for the fear and trauma they carry, I know this is part of the reality that loss leaves behind.
