@stephthearchaeologist: 2000 years ago what would this have looked like? A barren landscape where once were towns and settlements. The way the coastline changed so dramatically as well! Everything gone #historytok #history #archaeologytiktok #archaeologist #archaeology #pompeii #ancienthistory
And the fact that the survivors were lost to time so only the casualties were the true survivors in the end as we find them today

Its the fact that they literally burned to nothing and the magma cooled and created pockets where the bodies were and they got filled w plaster and thats the bodies we see today is just plaster

did you also know that under pompeii there’s multiple other civilizations that suffered the same fate we just stopped digging bc we felt we’d learned enough and it was disrespectful to keep going

the two skeletons found holding each other, one carressing the others cheek as they passed, forever their love frozen in time.

I wonder if disaster survivors visit here and feel a kinship

Does anyone ever think about how that one old forgotten grave in a lost cemetery in a ghost town you once discovered may have been a person you could have been friends with?

Standing in the main courtyard/market area and seeing the way it was set up to align with a mountaintop that’s no longer there rewired my brain a little bit

i studied latin for 5 years and we got to read some of the actual letters, and i cried so hard in one of my lessons after reading a letter about how a man had asked what was left and someone had told him there was nothing. he hadn’t realised it was all gone

I can honestly relate. A hurricane destroyed my hometown while I evacuated. I came home to survivors and a town I had spent my whole life in that I couldn't even find my way home.

pliny the younger has a detailed account. his uncle (pliny the elder) was also a historian and was caught in the eruption.

Had a similar feeling after a tornado removed my entire town and almost 5 years later we are still trying to clean up the debris.
