When the ventricles contract, that pattern reverses. The familiar “lub-dub” is created by valve closure. S1 (“lub”) occurs when the mitral and tricuspid valves close at the beginning of ventricular systole, while S2 (“dub”) occurs when the aortic and pulmonary valves close as systole ends and diastole begins.
