Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died Sunday at the age of 100.   A former peanut farmer and one-term governor of Georgia, Carter took office in January 1977 after defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford in the wake of the Watergate scandal.   Carter’s term was marked by rising inflation and an energy crisis, leading to the creation of the Energy Department in 1977. He also pushed for investments in schools and advocated for the formation of the Education Department, which was established in 1979.   His presidency was also characterized by international peace efforts — most notably, the Camp David Accords, signed in 1978 by the leaders of Egypt and Israel. The end of his term, however, was marred by the Iranian hostage crisis, in which pro-revolutionary students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held Americans hostage for 444 days, damaging Carter’s approval rating.   In the 1980 election, he faced a strong primary challenge from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, who won 12 states and refused to concede until the second day of the Democratic National Convention. Carter was soundly defeated by California Gov. Ronald Reagan in the general election.   He dedicated his post-presidency — the longest in U.S. history — to promoting human rights and charitable causes. The Carter Center was established in 1982 with the mission of advancing human rights and alleviating human suffering. He authored dozens of books, met with world leaders and participated in disaster relief efforts.   In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”   He was a self-described born-again Christian and taught Sunday school throughout his post-presidency at his local Baptist church in Plains, Georgia.   His wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, died in November 2023 at the age of 96.   They are survived by their four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. #jimmycarter #potus #rip #cspan
