This actually happened to me. When she was 10, my child googled ‘s.e.x.’ after learning about reproduction in her Year 5 health class. What’s the first thing that pops up when you google S.E.X.? 🌽🌽🌽🌽 And so she was exposed to 🌽 for the first time. Thankfully, she came and had a conversation with me straight away as what she had seen freaked her out and made her uncomfortable. We then had a discussion about what 🌽 is and isn’t, why it’s not appropriate for kids to look at it, why it’s not real, doesn’t represent real relationships and doesn’t share enthusiastic consent. She was only 10. I was able to mitigate and reduce the impact of seeing very ‘adult’ content which really shouldn’t be shown to our kids. Even with my 8 years in the police, talking to kids about their abuse, protective behaviours and body safety, talking to my own kid brought up my own protective instincts and I was freaking the F out. It’s ok to freak out, we just need to ensure we aren’t blaming, shaming, criticising, bullying or abusing our kids for making mistakes. Because ultimately, it’s our job as their parents to ensure their safety both in person and online and it’s our job to help turn these potentially dangerous and harmful situations into learning experiences. Check out my blogs for more ideas and information about how to talk to your kids about these topics and more or to read the full story of what happened.
